The Grandad Call

Wednesday night is 'The Grandad Call'. I used to find that talking on the phone took a big chunk of time out of the evening, and you can't get much done during a phone call. Right?

Wrong!!

The Grandad call routine has become quite elaborate over the past year and a half.
(1) I do my weekly clothes wash on Saturdays so that it is dry in time for Wednesday
(2) Instead of washing up throughout the day on Wednesday, all pots and pans are left until the end of the day
(3) Wednesday afternoon is ideal for baking and generally making a mess in the kitchen.
(4) One cordless phone and a handsfree ear piece, and the call begins some time after 6pm...

Gary often asks Grandad what I've been getting up to over the past week, and Grandad's answer is always the same "he's been washing up..."!

  2. I used to call Mum and then Uncle Eric every evening. If I was busy Mum's call could be very short but with Uncle Eric it was an unknown length and could be quite long. I did what you do and used a cordless phone with an earpiece and it was a real liberator.

The same thing happened with my credit card today. I booked a coach trip to London (£6), and then tried to book an onward journey to Cambridge (£7). The bank decided it was clearly fraud, shut down the card and phone me within 3 minutes.

  4. When thieves steal your identity or a card they start with some small transactions to check the card is still live and usable and then do a biggie. I had my Amex card details stolen (probably in a petrol station) and that's how they caught it. Fortunately Amex phoned me too and sorted the whole thing and I had a new card within days.
